| Osher Initiative for California Community College Students
This initiative will provide up to $70 million in endowed funds to support scholarship programs dedicated to California’s Community College students. An initial gift of $25 million, along with an additional pledge of $25 million in matching funds, has launched the California Community Colleges Scholarship Endowment.
Education is more important today than ever. We’ve all read the headlines: a slumping housing market, skyrocketing gasoline prices, worldwide food shortages. And we’ve all been affected in some way. But lack of opportunity can exacerbate these problems: Poor reading, writing and math skills have been shown to contribute to the increasing gap between rich and poor.
MPC has long been a route to prosperity for thousands – what we do goes beyond basic skills. A world-class nursing program supplies the healthcare field with top-flight professionals. Gentrain classes provide opportunities for lifelong learning to the general community. The Peggy Downes Baskin Series on Ethics hosts experts in their fields, such as journalist Carl Bernstein, to discuss ethical dilemmas we face today. The Foundation also raises funds for the Library Arts and Lecture Series, supports the Women’s Programs, and partners with the college in all fundraising endeavors.
And there are new challenges all the time. Recently, the Bernard Osher Foundation offered a challenge grant to California’s community colleges to raise $50 million in the next three years for student scholarships. To take advantage of its portion, MPC must raise $340,000.
For that and many other reasons, the MPC Foundation has a critical need to hire a development director – to build on and expand the important work we have engaged in. Our Foundation is 10 years old, and we have a small staff of various part-time personnel with an approximate equivalency of four full time. Studies say that the next staff position must be a development director – or fundraising will stagnate. After two years in this situation, we have come to understand the truth in these studies.
For more than 60 years we have helped students of all ages realize their dreams of going on to higher education, improving their job skills or simply helping them learn more about our increasingly complex world. Our goal is to help even more.
Thank you for considering our important request.
Very truly yours,
Marilynn Dunn Gustafson
