INVITES NOMINATIONS FOR COLLEGE INCENTIVE PROGRAM
& HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
MONTEREY, CA – March 22, 2016 – The Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) Foundation is accepting nominations for scholarships that support local high school graduates to attend MPC, and for an innovative college incentive program designed to increase college graduation rates among disadvantaged youth in the Monterey County region. Currently in its second year, the Howard and Karin Evans College Incentive Program provides participants with special resources and significant financial assistance to enroll full-time at MPC.
“The Evans College Incentive program is unique in that we are specifically looking for students who are not on track to go to college – those who are unlikely to attend or complete a college program due to the socioeconomic challenges they face,” explains Beccie Michael, MPC Foundation Executive Director. By combining financial assistance with specialized workshops, training sessions, counseling, and motivational activities, the program achieved significant success in its first year when 57 out of the original group of 67 students (85%) completed their first semester and all program requirements in Fall 2015.
Of the original group of students, 43% are living in households that earn less than $25,000, 78% are first-generation college students, 41% speak English as their second language, and 78% are an ethnicity other than White.
“We are so proud of the work our Foundation and Student Services division are doing with these young men and women,” states Dr. Walter Tribley, MPC Superintendent/President. “Reaching out to underrepresented youth in our community and giving them the support and guidance they need to earn a college degree is directly in line with MPC’s mission.”
The program is funded by Howard & Karin Evans, the MPC Foundation Board of Directors, the Nancy Buck Ransom Foundation, the Pebble Beach Company, and numerous private donors. Among the support activities participants receive are individualized meetings with MPC alum and former NFL player, Ron Johnson. Ron offers decades of experience working with at-risk youth, and is currently employed by the local Boys & Girls Club.
Nominations for the Howard & Karin Evans College Incentive Program may be submitted by staff members from any high school or organization that works with qualifying youth in MPC’s service area. Nominees must have financial need, face challenges or disadvantages that make them unlikely to attend or succeed at completing college, and have the potential to be successful if provided the right support, motivation, and financial assistance. In addition to the college incentive program, the Foundation is also accepting applications for qualified students for MPC Alumni Scholarships and Robert K. Bullock Journalism Scholarships. Awards are made to students graduating this spring from Carmel, Marina, Monterey, Seaside, or Pacific Grove high schools
Five MPC Alumni Scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to students who are related to an MPC alumnus and plan to attend MPC in the Fall 2016. MPC Alumni Scholarships are funded by the activities of the Foundation’s Alumni Comittee, chaired by Lee Gutierrez and Renee Kezirian.
Robert K. Bullock Journalism Scholarships, also $1,000 each, will be awarded to local students interested in pursuing a career in journalism, communications, or mass media who are planning to enroll at MPC in the Fall 2016. These scholarships honor the memory of Robert “Bob” Bullock and his lifelong passion for journalism. Bullock was the Herald’s news editor and sports editor for 43 years. He gifted over $2 million to the MPC Foundation through his estate.
