Dr. Douglas Garrison Fund for Educational Excellence: REPORT

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2013

This faculty grant fund was established to honor the tenure of Dr. Douglas Garrison as Monterey Peninsula College’s Superintendent/President. Dr. Garrison’s tenure in the California community college system stretched over thirty-eight years at four separate institutions. He spent sixteen years in the classroom and nearly twenty-three years in administration. During his time at MPC from 2006-2012, Dr. Garrison maintained the integrity of MPC through a time of difficult financial challenges, always seeking the input of college faculty, staff, and students. His legacy is one that has garnered the respect of our community, and we are proud to honor this legacy through the Dr. Douglas Garrison Fund for Education Excellence.

This faculty grant fund is used to support one or more summer sabbatical projects annually that improve MPC  classes through the implementation of innovative instructional methodologies, inclusion of research findings, exposure to   recent developments in specific academic fields, or other activities that will enhance the classroom experience of our students.

This year’s grant was awarded to Dr. Ana Garcia-Garcia, Adjunct Instructor of Geol2/2L in the Physical Sciences Division. Dr. Garcia-Garcia’s final report is titled, “Seismic Surveys in the Elkhorn Slough with MPC Students to Understand Underwater Geology and Correlate the Indirect Information with the Coring Samples They Obtain in Field Trips.”
