Every MPC Student is Eligible
MPC and the MPC Foundation offer a variety of scholarships that can help you fund your education. If you are taking at least one class at MPC in the spring or plan to take at least one class in the fall, you are eligible to apply for scholarships. Scholarships are available for students who are coming to MPC for the first time, students who are continuing at MPC, and students who are transferring to four-year colleges or universities.

Essay Assistance is available through the Reading & Writing Center at the MPC Library. The Reading and Writing Center offers essay writing workshops, online assistance, and in-person support. Assistance available anytime.
Workshop Materials. The MPC Foundation conducts several workshops during the scholarship application period. Workshop materials will be posted here when they are available. Workshops are held between December and March while the application is open.
Named MPC Scholarships
Alumni Association High School Scholarship
The Alumni Association is committed to providing scholarship support for family members of alumni who attend MPC full time. Each spring, awards are granted for the following school year to incoming freshman from the five local high schools (Carmel HS, Marina HS, Monterey HS, Pacific Grove HS, and Seaside HS) who are related to an alumnus/alumna of the college.
The Alumni Association Returning Student Scholarship
The Alumni Association is committed to providing scholarship support for family members of alumni who attend MPC full time. Each spring, awards are granted for the following school year to returning MPC students who are related to an alumnus/alumna of the college.
American Legion/Fred Blackley Scholarship
The American Legion/Fred Blackley Scholarship was established in 2023 with the purpose of supporting Monterey Peninsula College students in memory of Fred Blackley. This scholarship is intended for veterans attending MPC who have financial need.
Fred Blackley will always be remembered for his advocacy of higher education opportunities for military veterans. Mr. Blackley believed that the men and women who have served in the United States military are most deserving of educational opportunities that enable veterans to pursue a college education. Toward that end, Mr. Blackley, a long-time member of The American Legion Post 694 in Marina, CA, bequeathed a $6,000 endowment fund to the Post with the stipulation that the funds be used to further education opportunities for veterans in the community through an annual scholarship.
Midori Arima Scholarships
This scholarship fund was established in 2017 by Adrian Arima in memory of his mother, Midori Arima. Scholarships support students who are connected to the Access Resource Center (ARC) at MPC, which supports students by offering academic counseling, specialized instruction, and classroom accommodations to students with a verified disability. The ARC Advocacy Award highlights a student who serves as a role model to others in the ARC community, and the ARC Student Success Award highlights students who have found success in the face of adversity.
Stan Armstead Community Service Award
The Black Student Union and MPC host a Rites of Passage event, and a community service award with a scholarship is given to one of the students participating in the event, called the Stan Armstead Community Service Award.
Ashton Family Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2020 by Geoffrey and Suzanne Ashton and provides educational opportunities for passionate students with financial need who are pursuing a degree in STEM or hospitality.
ASMPC Scholarships – Students Helping Students
The ASMPC Scholarship – Students Helping Students, was created to promote academic excellence and involvement in the MPC Community. This scholarship is unique in that it is the first scholarship at MPC funded by current students! The Associated Students of Monterey Peninsula College (ASMPC) is responsible for the coordination and support of student activities and organizations, while increasing the cooperation between students, faculty and the community.
Theodore Balestreri Scholarship Fund
This scholarship supports students with financial need who are majoring in Hospitality Management. The scholarship honors Theodore Balestreri’s significant and successful accomplishments locally in the hospitality industry.
Barker Military Scholarship
Established in 2011, these awards support qualifying veterans or military dependents at Monterey Peninsula College. Students are eligible to receive funding for up to four subsequent semesters at MPC or until they graduate, whichever comes first.
John Newman Becker Memorial Scholarship
The John Newman Becker Memorial Scholarship was established by his family and friends in memory of cancer patient John Becker, who was lovingly cared for by the nurses of Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula. It recognizes students in the Maurine Church Coburn School of Nursing who are dedicated to caring for patients and who will benefit from assistance in obtaining their nursing degrees.
Ron Bird Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Susan Farris, mother of Ron Bird, to support Monterey Peninsula College students enrolled in the Creative Arts Division. This scholarship is in memory of the late Ron Bird, an MPC Alumni, devoted father, friend of many, and one of the top real estate photographers on the Monterey Peninsula.
The Ron Bird Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a financially needy student at Monterey Peninsula College, studying within the Creative Arts Division.
Black Excellence Alliance Scholarship
The purpose of this fund, established in 2023, is to support Black/African American students at Monterey Peninsula College who plan to transfer to University of California, Santa Cruz in the subsequent fall semester.
Ann J. Brorsen Scholarship
This scholarship is in honor of Ann J. Brorsen. She is a nurse who has been a preceptor and mentor for thousands of nurses during her career. She was a recipient of the guidance from Forsyte, Roberts, and Ehrat as a nursing student. During her 40+ career as a nurse, Ann continues to pay it forward to encourage, support, and sponsor nursing students and nurses. Ann demonstrates the importance of compassion, passion and life-long learning to all she has taught and mentored.
Mrs. Barbara Bucquet Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2019 in order to provide scholarship support for MPC students. Recipients must be incoming high school students, or re-entry students in their first semester, with financial need and a GPA of 3.0 or better.
Robert K. Bullock Journalism Scholarship Endowment
The Robert K. Bullock Journalism Scholarship inspires and empowers students attending MPC to pursue a degree in journalism, communication or mass media. This journalism scholarship honors Robert K. Bullock’s memory and passion for journalism and his commitment and contributions to our community as a journalist and philanthropist. Three separate scholarship funds are available for journalism students: incoming freshmen, returning MPC students, and students from MPC who are transferring to a four-year college.
Mrs. Barbara Bucquet Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2019 in order to provide scholarship support for MPC students. Recipients must be incoming high school students, or re-entry students in their first semester, with financial need and a GPA of 3.0 or better.
Dr. Linda Bynoe and Mr. Dudley Bynoe Scholarship
Dr. Linda Turner Bynoe and Dudley Bynoe established this scholarship to support students who are transient or housing insecure, and to help improve their community and social standing through financial support and encouragement.
Thomas Campbell Scholarship Fund
This fund was created with the purpose of providing scholarships in Thomas Campbell’s memory to outstanding MPC Fire Academy Students. Recognizing Tom’s support for education, there scholarships will be presented to the student from each Academy who has earned the title of “Top Gun” through their exemplary performance.
Aaron Cepeda & Family Paying It Forward Scholarship
Aaron Cepeda, MPC Alumni, and the Cepeda Family established this scholarship in 2019
in honor of the support that Aaron received as a student when he attended Monterey
Peninsula College. This scholarship is intended to Pay It Forward to a deserving student
annually who shows dedication, integrity and the will to succeed.

Aaron Cepeda and the Cepeda Family established this scholarship in 2019 in honor of the support that Aaron received as a student when he attended Monterey Peninsula College. Vera Coleman Scholarship
This scholarship is for students who have completed at least six units at MPC. Financial need is considered for this award.
Steven Crouch Scholarship
This scholarship is for MPC students pursuing any major who maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.

Peter J. Cutino Athlete-Of-The-Year Scholarship Fund
Born and raised in Monterey, Pete Cutino attended Monterey High School and Monterey Peninsula College where he excelled in water polo. After graduating from Cal Poly he coached water polo at University of California Berkeley for 26 years including eight national championships, four NCAA championships and was named as the PAC-10 Coach of the Year. The Peter J. Cutino Athlete-of-the-Year Award is awarded annually to the top female and male athletes currently attending MPC.
Camila de la Llata Memorial Theatre Scholarship
The purpose of this fund is to honor and perpetuate Camila's memory by offering an annual scholarship to a promising Theatre Arts Major at Monterey Peninsula College in Camila's name.
Carmel Woman’s Club Women Reaching Out to Women Scholarship
Eligible students who are Monterey County residents can be any major with a minimum 2.0 CGPA. Students must be community service–conscious and have financial need. Applicants are required to complete the Carmel Woman’s Club Scholarship Application.

Donald L. Davidson, M.D. Memorial Scholarship
The Donald L. Davidson Memorial Scholarship was created to provide scholarship aid for an MPC student with financial need transferring to a four-year institution in the fall and pursuing a career in medicine or medical science. Applicants should be committed to improving the lives of others. They may have overcome adverse socioeconomic circumstances. Re-entry students are encouraged to apply.
Lydia Davis Re-Entry Scholarship
Established in memory of Lydia Davis, this scholarship is for nursing students about to start their second year at the Maurine Church Coburn School of Nursing and who are also re-entry students.
Jennifer Denmark Scholarship Endowment for the MPC Fire Academy
Family and friends began this fund in memory of Jennifer Denmark, a student of the MPC Fire Academy who tragically passed away in 2010. This award is given to a current student in the MPC Fire Academy who demonstrates financial need, a commitment to academics, and to helping others.
Tamara J. Doe Scholarship
This scholarship is in memory of Tamara J. Doe, who for many years was a single, working mother. Through her strength, love, and resilience, she served as an inspiration to her two children.
Her passions in life were art, literature, and travel. It is the donors’ wish that these funds be awarded to a single parent and first-generation student, who is seeking a degree to ensure a brighter future. The scholarship recipient must also demonstrate financial need.
Doolittle Performing Arts Scholarship
The Doolittle Performing Arts Fund grants scholarship awards to students with financial need who are studying the performing arts.
Oscar Dunn and Alexandra Clark Scholarship Fund
This tremendous scholarship honors the memories of Alexandra Page Clark and her husband Oscar Dunn by providing multiple scholarships to financially needy science students at MPC.
Alison Faul Memorial Scholarship
Former MPC President George J. (Bob) Faul and his wife, Pat Faul, created this scholarship in memory of their daughter, Alison. It is awarded annually in the amount of $1,000 to an MPC music student with an interest in pursuing music after graduation.
Fletes-Cristobal Adelante Award
The Fletes-Cristobal Family established this scholarship fund to honor the cultural wealth students of color bring to the California Community Colleges. The scholarship is intended to serve as an opportunity to empower first-generation students to pursue higher education and highlight the strengths they bring to Monterey Peninsula College.
Forsyte, Roberts, and Ehrat Scholarship
This scholarship is in memory of three nursing professors who encouraged, supported, and sponsored nursing students. They strove to impart the importance of compassion, passion, and life-long academic learning on those they taught and mentored. They each had a different approach to mentorship, but always with the goal to “grow and nurture” the next generation.
Gentrain Society Scholarship
These scholarships are for students studying any major with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. Applicants must be re-entry students, enrolled in at least 6 units and have a minimum of two instructor recommendations.

Phyllis E. Girard Memorial Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide funding for women who, like Phyllis, overcame obstacles beyond their control and have returned to college to pursue their educational goals. It was created in memory of Phyllis E. Girard, an incredible woman who, after facing much adversity, returned to school in her later years and accomplished great success.
Green Family Scholarship in Memory of Major J. Green
This scholarship for hospitality students at MPC was created by the children of Major J. Green to acknowledge his positive contributions as a proud citizen of the Monterey Peninsula. After his WWII service with the United States Army in the 1940s, this veteran made his forever home on the Monterey Peninsula. A successful sous-chef with several Monterey and Carmel employers, Major encouraged the development of those who choose a career in the culinary arts.
Green Family Scholarship - In Memory of Socorro J. Green
This scholarship was created by the children of Socorro J. Green to acknowledge her support of formal education and work experience. An immigrant from the Philippines, Socorro J. Green, affectionately known as Corina, made her home on the Monterey Peninsula, raised four successful children, and contributed to the family income as an honorable domestic worker outside of the home. MPC students studying hospitality are eligible for this scholarship.
Nancy Green Scholarship
This fund was established in 2023 in memory of Nancy Green to help an MPC re-entry student who is studying in the liberal arts.
Bruce Clarke Gregor Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by memorial contributions from the friends and family of Bruce Gregor. Mr. Gregor graduated from Pacific Grove High School, MPC, Cal State University at Sacramento, and McGeorge School of Law. At MPC he learned that “he didn’t have to be a cook in the Coast Guard all of his life.” He was in solo law practice in Sacramento and participated in many Sacramento business groups.
Marilyn Dunn Gustafson Scholarship
Marilyn served as Executive Director of the MPC Foundation from 2000–2009. Family and friends established this scholarship in recognition of her tenure at the Foundation. The recipient of this award must have financial need, be taking six or more units at MPC or matriculating to a four-year college, have a 3.0 GPA, and be a single parent.
Rosabelle Hamann Memorial Scholarship
Rosabelle Hamann became a faculty member at MPC in 1946 and served for twenty years as an instructor in Family Life Education and as an advisor to international students. She was a teacher, artist, world traveler, and friend to all she met. Two scholarships of $2,000 are given annually to full-time students who have been accepted into four-year programs, and who demonstrate financial need and the focus to attain their educational goals.
Dr. Kris Hardin Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is for Cultural Anthropology majors with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Students must have full-time enrollment and be transferring to a four-year institution.
Ofa Hautau Spirit Scholarship
The Ofa Hautau Spirit Scholarship is being established in memory of Ofa Hautau, an MPC alumni, athlete, and coach who was loved by many. This scholarship will honor his strong and positive spirit, and continue his support for future Monterey Peninsula College student-athletes as they transfer to the university level.
The Ofa Hautau Spirit Scholarship will be awarded annually to student-athletes at MPC who embody Ofa’s spirit, which will live on forever.
Hilda Holl Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was created by the Carmel Valley Rotary Club Foundation and Michael Holl, the widower of Hilda Holl. There is a preference, but not a requirement, for the scholarship recipients to be business students that are Hispanic and female.

Hornik Family Foundation Scholarship for Merit in STEM
The Hornik Family Foundation established this scholarship in 2023 to reward high-achieving and motivated STEM students at MPC. Ideal candidates for this scholarship would relate to the following:

- Students who will become future leaders in STEM and portray the ideals of a STEM professional (creativity, curiosity, drive, and a love for the natural world).
- Students who have taken it upon themselves to pursue STEM outside the classroom through clubs, internships, personal projects, or other means.

While a high GPA indicates some dedication to education and STEM, our scholarship goes beyond a traditional merit-based scholarship. Academic improvement, extracurriculars (including non-organized pursuits), and potential are large portions of the evaluation process.
Dr. Richard Kezirian Endowed Scholarship
After an illustrious and celebrated 40-year teaching career at MPC, Dr. Kezirian has had a hand in shaping this campus, its curriculum, and his students throughout the years. Upon his retirement in 2011, family and friends honored him with the establishment of this endowment to assist current MPC students in reaching their educational goals at MPC.
Kim Kingswold Memorial Scholarship
Kim Kingswold was a beloved MPC staff member, enthusiastic long-time student, and supporter of MPC's Dance program. This scholarship honors her legacy by encouraging a dedicated MPC dance student with financial need to pursue their passion for dance.
Bessie Knight Ecology/Biological Science Scholarship
This scholarship is for Ecology or Biological Science majors who have completed at least 30 units at MPC and who are transferring to a four-year institution with full-time enrollment in the fall.
Bessie Knight Horticulture Scholarship
This scholarship is for students majoring in Ornamental Horticulture who have completed at least 24 units at MPC and who are transferring to a four-year institution with full-time enrollment in Fall 2022.
Jon M. Lefstad Scholarship
Long-time Monterey resident Nancy Lefstad created this scholarship in memory of her son, Jon. It is awarded annually to a currently enrolled MPC student with a B+ average pursuing a military career, or to a student who has already served in the military, and who demonstrates the need for financial assistance and an interest in computer science.
MacKenzie Family Scholarship
This incredibly generous scholarship was established by the MacKenzie Family received in 2020. These funds support scholarships for current MPC students with financial need and who will be enrolled in at least six units in the upcoming fall semester.
Mahoney-Stevens Scholarship Fund
This collaborative fund came about from multiple donors: the Mahoney Family, Marilynn Gustafson and Marshall Bloom. It combined two existing funds into a permanent endowment that now funds three students annually who are enrolled in the Evans College Incentive Program. These students are high school students transferring to Monterey Peninsula College, who are not currently on track to obtain a college education but show promise, if provided the right support and resources.
Terry Mallery Scholarship
The Terry Mallery Scholarship supports students pursuing degrees in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math.) Students should be on a path to transfer to a four-year institution, have financial need, and maintain a 3.0 GPA during their time at MPC.
Marina Campus Scholarship
To support students taking classes at the MPC Marina Campus.
Donna McCarron Happy Days Scholarship
This scholarship for hard working MPC students is in memory of Donna Marie McCarron, an Irish girl who enjoyed the happiest days of her life in Monterey, studying Science at MPC. She worked hard, she shared hard, and she was a supportive, dependable friend to many. Donna's aspiration was to study Biology at a four-year university, and she did just that, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Towson University after graduating from MPC.
Milton C. McDowell Scholarship
This scholarship supports two students annually who are a part of the CARE/CalWorks programs at MPC. It recognizes that some students, as single parents, may face additional challenges in trying to obtain their education such as lack of childcare, transportation issues, and family difficulties. The programs, and this scholarship, strive to assist single parents in achieving their educational goals in order to help them obtain a better career to support their families.
Monterey County Association of Realtors
This scholarship is for Business majors with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and full-time enrollment who are transferring in the fall to a four-year institution.
Monterey Peninsula Firemanship Award
This scholarship promotes the pursuit of academic excellence and support the incoming generation of firefighters who strive to master their craft. An award is provided to an exemplary graduating student in the Fire Academy each semester, and each subsequent award is presented by the previous awardee.
MPC Foundation General Scholarship
The MPC Foundation General Scholarship provides students with assistance to help them accomplish their educational goals.
MPC Managers and Supervisors Group Scholarship
The MPC Managers & Supervisors Group provides this scholarship for students at MPC who are enrolled for at least six units each semester.
Harland and Lillie Murphy Scholarship
This scholarship is for graduating high school students who will be attending MPC in the upcoming fall semester.

Terry Lee Nance Baseball Scholarship
This fund was established in memory of Terry Nance, a local baseball legend who graduated from Pacific Grove High and attended MPC in the early 70’s. Terry was an all-star pitcher who, while attending MPC, was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1971, as well as the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam War. He returned to MPC in 1973 to be drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers. This scholarship awards $1,000 to current MPC baseball players transferring to a four-year university.
Donald and Laura Newmark Scholarship
The Donald and Laura Newmark Scholarship was created to provide scholarship aid to deserving, current MPC students requiring financial assistance as they transferred to other institutions. Applicants must have financial need and demonstrate commitment and focus in their educational pursuits through academic achievement by maintaining a 3.5 CGPA. Applicants should have a clearly articulated career path.
Anna and Andrew Nguyen Nursing Scholarship Endowment
Andrew Nguyen came to Monterey in 1954 after completing his education in Viet Nam, the Sorbonne in Paris and Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. He was forced to flee Viet Nam because of his opposition to communism. He was recruited to establish the Vietnamese language program at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey where he worked for 29 years. He co-authored the first Vietnamese background textbook and also served as an instructor at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. His wife Anna and their nine children joined him in Monterey in 1961. Andrew and Anna instilled the importance of higher education in all of their children who went on to have a variety of successful careers including government, social work, ichthyology, architecture, industrial engineering, economics, hospitality and nursing. The Andrew and Anna Nguyen Nursing Scholarship was established by their son, Phi Ho Nguyen, to honor their legacy and their many contributions to the Vietnamese community.
Nina’s Scholarship
The purpose of the Fund is to honor the memory of Claudia’s daughter, and Bill’s stepdaughter, Nina by providing scholarships to Monterey Peninsula College students who are facing some kind of hardship, such as, but not limited to, medical issues, housing insecurity, or former foster care status.
Pay It Forward Scholarship Fund
A scholarship fund created by two MPC graduates to support students pursuing degrees in Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, or related disciplines
O’Hare/Chenoweth Family Scholarship
This scholarship was created to honor the members of the O’Hare and Chenoweth families, who have and will continue to value education as a pathway to success no matter how many obstacles are put in one’s way. In particular, it honors a dedicated mother of three who originally did not attend college out of high school because she was told college was not for people like her because her family was under-resourced and later in life she pursued and earned her degree from a local community college while caring for her young daughters. In turn, that extraordinary woman inspired her daughters to obtain advanced degrees, teach, and advocate for equitable education for all. In our family, we know education is important but must be encouraged and accessible to everyone. With this scholarship, we hope that the recipients will continue their educational journey and inspire those around them to do the same.
Rod Oka Scholarship
Rod was a beloved Chemistry instructor, making a lasting impression on thousands of students’ lives during the 28 years that he taught at MPC. This scholarship honors his memory by providing scholarships to deserving MPC students who have completed or who are taking Organic Chemistry and who have an educational goal to obtain a graduate or professional degree in a scientific field of study.
Nellie Irons Orr Scholarship Fund
Nellie Irons Orr established the scholarship at MPC in order to support educational programs where students receive training and experience increasing their potential for employment upon completion of their studies. The scholarship is open to all students, as long as they complete six units in the spring of the application period <or> in the upcoming fall semester.
Osher Scholarships
Osher Scholarships support students who have demonstrated a commitment to completing their education and have certain financial hardships that make it difficult to pay for the cost of attending college. Students must have completed at least 24 units at MPC to be eligible, and awards are prorated based on the number of units being taken each semester (minimum of six units each semester).
Sylvia M. Panetta Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a Social Science major with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 who is transferring to a four-year institution in the upcoming fall.
Pat Patrick Scholarship
This scholarship is given to an MPC special teams football player who is transferring to a four-year institution in honor of Pat Patrick, MPC Alumni and football player.
Coach Luke Phillips Scholarship Fund
Victoria Samora Phillips established this scholarship in 2018 in memory of Luke Phillips, her beloved husband, as well as MPC Alumni, former MPC football player, and coach. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide an annual scholarship for financially needy students at MPC who embody the spirit of Luke Phillips’ life and legacy.
Carl and Eleanor Pilat Memorial Scholarship
These scholarships were established in 2018 through a legacy gift from Mr. Peter Pilat. The purpose of the endowment is to provide scholarship aid for MPC students in the Creative Arts program.
Frances Quinones Scholarship
This scholarship is for current high school students only, in any major, who are enrolling at MPC for the upcoming fall semester.

Floyd S. Richards Scholarship
The Floyd S. Richards Scholarship is awarded annually to one outstanding MPC student who is transferring from Monterey Peninsula College to a four-year institution to further their education.
Rotary Club of Monterey Academic Scholarship

Rotary Club of Monterey Vocational Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a 2nd year (30+ units completed) vocational student who will be transferring to a four-year or any other type of institution in the fall.
Sam Saves a Life (SAL) Scholarship
The purpose of the Fund will be to support Monterey Peninsula College students enrolled in the Emergency Medical technician training program at Monterey Peninsula College to afford up-front program costs that could otherwise prohibit them from pursuing their goals.
Bertha C. Samora Memorial Scholarship
The Bertha C. Samora Scholarship Award honors a woman who raised three daughters to be strong, independent thinkers. She asked them to find their passions in life, to stand up for their beliefs and to work hard and be generous with their families, jobs and communities. She also promoted looking for the best in people and situations. This scholarship is for Monterey County students who have completed at least 30 units at MPC.

Frank G. Samora Scholarship
The Frank G. Samora Scholarship Award honors a man who was committed to his family. He taught his daughters to respect themselves and others; to be strong individuals; to be leaders in their communities; to be of good character; to enjoy their families and to enjoy nature. This scholarship is for Monterey County students who have completed at least 30 units at MPC.

Larry Segovia Athletic Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Larry Segovia, a local sports icon born and raised in New Monterey. Larry graduated from Monterey High School, where he excelled in five sports (Baseball, Football, Basketball, Track, and Golf). Larry played football in Fort Ord and Germany as well as AA/AAA baseball for many leagues from the Southwest to the Pacific Northwest. Larry is an inductee of the MPC Lobo Hall of Fame (attendance 1951-1952) for his athletic achievements.
Most will recognize the name Segovia from the bar that bears his name, in operation for 85+ years. The bar was Larry's life, and he shared his life with many patrons, most who became friends, each of whom would tell you Larry was kind, caring, and ever generous to a fault. Larry was a man for the common man as well as a "man's man". Larry was proud, confident, tenderhearted, striking, brimming with charisma, and principled. Larry would be the first to help a friend in need and the last to seek the same in return.
This scholarship was established by Larry's grandson, Brandon Segovia, to honor his legacy on and off the field, and to provide financial assistance to top athletic scholar(s) attending Monterey Peninsula College.
William M. Shanner Award
This scholarship in honor of William M. Shanner provides funds to a currently enrolled student in his or her final semester at the MPC Maurine Church Coburn School of Nursing. This award is designed for a student who has demonstrated a strong interest in preventative health care.
Clyn Smith, M.D. Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Clyn Smith practiced medicine on the Monterey Peninsula for many years. To honor his memory and his commitment to wellness and preventative health care, his family established a scholarship that is awarded to students who have completed one semester at the Maurine Church Coburn School of Nursing with a B average. The recipient should be committed to helping and teaching others.
Sherman Smith Scholarship
This scholarship is for students pursuing any major at MPC who maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Dolores Joy Snowdon Scholarship
This scholarship was established to award scholarships to an MPC football player in memory of Dolores Joy Snowdon. Eligible recipients graduate in the Spring and transfer to a four-year university in the fall, have financial need, and have played for the MPC Football team for at least a year.
John "Spud" Spadaro Hospitality Award
The annual John “Spud” Spadaro Hospitality Awards Dinner acknowledges a group of people who have exhibited a high level of achievement in the hospitality industry.
Proceeds from the event goes toward John “Spud” Spadaro Hospitality Scholarships at Monterey Peninsula College where each year recipients are honored.
David and Barbara Spence Hospitality Management Scholarship
The purpose of the Fund will be to support Monterey Peninsula College Hospitality Managements students with a special scholarship in memory of David Spence, MPC Professor Emeritus.
Tor Spindler Memorial Police Training Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to an Administration of Justice, Criminal Justice, or Law Enforcement Major who is transferring to a four-year institution in the fall. The scholarship is in honor of Warren “ Tor” Spindler, who was a most beloved football coach and teacher here at MPC. Professor Spindler taught Administration of Justice. He was an ex-marine and was a very large man who pushed his players to be the best they could be.
Leon & Mary-Lou Stutzman Choral Music Scholarship
Leon and Mary Lou Stutzman were long-time residents of the Monterey Peninsula and lovers of choral music. This scholarship is awarded to full-time MPC students who have demonstrated a strong desire for a career in music, especially choral music, and need financial assistance to attain their educational goals.
Mary-Lou Stutzman Nursing Scholarship
Mary Lou Stutzman overcame disease and sickness in her youth to become an advocate for the underprivileged in Monterey County. This scholarship is awarded to nursing students in the Maurine Church Coburn School of Nursing, who are Monterey Peninsula residents, demonstrate the need for financial assistance, and have overcome adversity or physical handicap to pursue their goals.
Sullivan Family Scholarship
The Sullivan Family Scholarship was generously established by the Sullivan Family in 2023 to support MPC students in financial need.
Tarbox Family Eagle Scout Scholarship
The Tarbox family recognizes the hard work and dedication that earning the rank of Eagle entails. Starting with Grandfather Al Tarbox back in 1926, and most recently with son Luke Tarbox in 2020, Eagle Scout Eric Tarbox and his wife Annie started this scholarship in 2022 to provide a helping hand to a student of any age attending MPC who has earned the rank of Eagle.
Tostado Family Scholarship
This scholarship is for current MPC students who will be enrolled for nine or more units in the upcoming fall semester.

Dr. Winona Trason Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was established in 2015 in order to honor the memory and legacy of Dr. Winona Jean Bethune Trason, MPC Biology Professor Emeritus, by providing scholarships to students with financial need who are enrolled Maurine Church Coburn School of Nursing at MPC.
The Jim Tunney Scholar Athlete Award
In recognition of his twelve years of service as a member of the MPC Board of Trustees and his designation as the 2010 MPC President’s Award winner, this scholarship was established to honor Jim’s work with the college through the contributions of his family and friends. Extraordinary MPC scholar athletes from Carmel HS, Marina HS, Monterey HS, Pacific Grove HS, and Seaside HS who are transferring to a four-year institution are eligible.
Ruth Vreeland Memorial Scholarship - Sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW)
This scholarship is for student pursuing any major, although STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields are a plus. Students will be in their 2nd year (minimum 30.0 units completed) and transferring to a four-year institution in the fall.

Larry and Leslie Walker Scholarship
The Larry and Leslie Walker Scholarship was established in 2024 to recognize and honor the work and contributions of the Walker Family to MPC. The scholarship is designed to support student-athletes who identify as African American and who graduate and/or transfer from MPC to a four year institution.
We Believe Scholarship
The We Believe scholarship was established in 2023 to provide scholarship support for an MPC student who has experienced being in the foster care system and/or housing insecurity. The recipient must have financial need and may be an incoming high school student, or a re-entry student. They must be enrolled in 6 or more credits with a GPA of 2.7 or better in their previous term. It is preferred that the recipient is a female.
Mary Lou Welch Endowed Scholarship
On behalf of friends and family of Mary Lou Welch, the Mary Lou Welch Endowed Scholarship was established with the purpose of remembering Mary Lou Welch through a scholarship for a student transferring to a four-year institution.
Judy Wiese Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is for a returning (completed at least one year) MPC student who is a Monterey County resident studying any major with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a minimum 3/4 time enrollment.

Bill and Sherry Young Scholarship
Bill and Sherry Young established this scholarship in 2015 to support financially needy Monterey Peninsula College students who are pursuing an education in any major. Applicants must be enrolled at least six units, and may be transferring to a four-year university or continuing their studies at MPC.
George and Ruth Young Scholarship
The George and Ruth Young Scholarship supports graduates of Pacific Grove High School who will become full-time students at MPC in the Fall.
Young Family Scholarship
The Young Family Scholarship provides continuing financial support to previous recipients of the George and Ruth Young Scholarship who are academically succeeding in their 2nd year at MPC with a 3.5 GPA or higher.
